Following the huge listener response to Leonard Bernstein's introduction to Charles Ives' second symphony a few weeks ago, Karishmeh explores Bernstein's own second symphony, titled "The Age of Anxiety" in this edition of Offbeat. The Symphony, dedicated to Bernstein's teacher, mentor and friend, Serge Koussevitzky was premiered in 1949 with the composer on piano, and Koussevitzky conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra.The first half of the program focuses on the background of the piece, the critical reception, and also provides a detailed explanation of the characters in Auden's poem, and the connection between the text and Bernstein's music, with musical examples illustrating the spoken introductions. The second half of the program features the Symphony in its entirety, so that the listener can experience and understand all that has been described in the first half.
